EPA Inspections Show Nearly 50% of Septic Tanks are Faulty
Faulty septic tanks pose a major threat to public health and the environment but latest round of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) inspections show that nearly half of septic tanks in Ireland are faulty or are not functioning as they should. Why Do I Need to Maintain my Septic Tank?
A faulty septic tank poses a serious health risk to people near you and the environment. Director of the EPA’s office of environmental enforcement Dr Tom Ryan commented on the matter “If you do not maintain your septic tank, it can contaminate your own or your neighbour’s well or your local stream, putting your health at risk and that of your family and neighbours.”
The problem with septic tanks that failed the recent inspections is that they were not built or maintained properly. This is the conclusion of an EPA review of more than 2,000 inspections of septic tanks in 2017 and 2018. This is a serious problem and one that needs to be addressed promptly.
The EPA highlight that the responsibility for correcting septic tank issues and keeping them correctly maintained lies with the householder.
The good news is that the government are helping to tackle this issue with an expanded septic tank grant scheme due to be launched later this year which will increase the maximum grant aid available to €5,000 and remove the required means test.
